For many women, persistent swelling, pain, or disproportionate fat distribution in the legs or arms can be confusing and frustrating, especially when diet and exercise don’t seem to make a difference.
One possible explanation is lipoedema, a chronic condition that is still widely misunderstood but increasingly recognised by health professionals.
At Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions (CRLS) on the Central Coast, awareness of lipoedema is growing as more women seek answers about unexplained swelling, discomfort, and changes in body shape.
What Is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic connective tissue disorder characterised by an abnormal accumulation of fat (adipose tissue inflammatory in nature) beneath the skin, most commonly affecting the legs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms.
Unlike general weight gain, the fat distribution in lipoedema tends to be symmetrical and disproportionate, with the upper body often remaining relatively smaller compared with the lower body.
The condition almost exclusively affects women and may develop during periods of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.
Research suggests lipoedema may affect around 9–11% of women, although many cases remain undiagnosed.
Common Symptoms of Lipoedema
Lipoedema can present differently from person to person, but common features include:
- Disproportionate fat distribution in the legs, hips or arms
- Pain or tenderness in affected areas
- Easy bruising
- A feeling of heaviness in the limbs
- Swelling that may worsen throughout the day
- Skin with a soft or ‘mattress-like’ texture
Many people also notice that diet and exercise have little effect on the affected areas, which can lead to frustration and delayed diagnosis.
The Connection Between Lipoedema and the Lymphatic System
Although lipoedema primarily affects fat tissue, it can also impact the lymphatic system, which plays a key role in fluid balance and immune function.
Over time, increased fat tissue may place pressure on lymphatic vessels and contribute to swelling or the development of lipo-lymphoedema, where both conditions occur together.
This is why specialised assessment by clinicians experienced in lymphatic health is important.
Management and Support at CRLS
At Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions (CRLS), the focus is on providing individualised assessment and supportive management strategies for people living with lymphatic and chronic swelling conditions.
Led by Founder and Lymphoedema Therapist Kate Perkins and supported by Cailtin Hobday, CRLS integrates evidence-informed approaches designed to support comfort, function, and long-term wellbeing.
Management strategies may include:
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Compression therapy and garment advice
- Exercise-based rehabilitation programs
- Education and self-management strategies
- Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) using MLS laser technology where clinically appropriate
These approaches are tailored to each individual’s symptoms, stage of the condition, and overall health goals.
Why Early Recognition Matters
Early assessment can help individuals better understand their symptoms and explore management strategies that may reduce discomfort and improve mobility.
Recognising lipoedema can also help address the emotional impact many women experience when symptoms are misunderstood or attributed solely to lifestyle factors.
With growing awareness among clinicians and researchers, more people are gaining access to specialised care and support.
Supporting Patients on the Central Coast
At CRLS, the goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care for people managing lymphatic conditions, cancer recovery, and complex swelling disorders.
For those experiencing persistent swelling, heaviness, or pain that does not respond to conventional approaches, seeking professional advice can be an important step toward understanding what is happening in the body and exploring appropriate management options.
