Pilates offers gentle yet powerful support for those navigating cancer recovery or chronic conditions like lymphoedema. By targeting core strength, mobility, and breath control, it can help ease discomfort and build back confidence in movement – making day-to-day life feel that little bit more manageable.
At Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions, our group Pilates classes are led by the wonderful Michelle (Mish) – our energetic receptionist, experienced fitness instructor, and a much-loved part of the team. With over a decade of experience teaching dance and group fitness, Mish brings both skill and heart to every class.
She has created a calm, supportive space where every participant feels safe, supported, and seen – but we wanted to find out a bit more! So we sat down with Mish to learn more about her approach and why she believes Pilates is such a powerful tool during recovery.
Q&A with Mish – Pilates Instructor
What inspired you to start teaching Pilates, and how did you come to work at Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions?
I’ve been working as a group fitness instructor for years, mainly in dance fitness and HIIT classes. I was inspired to teach Pilates after I participated in another instructor’s class and learnt how important it is; not only for general fitness, but for building core strength and improving stability.
I applied to work at CRLS at a time when I was searching for a more fulfilling job – the receptionist position came up at just the right moment! I’d worked in the medical field for many years and knew I wanted to continue on that path.
What makes Pilates such a great form of exercise for people recovering from cancer treatment or managing chronic conditions like lymphoedema?
Pilates is incredibly effective for recovery. It helps rebuild strength, especially in the arms and chest, which is so important for people recovering from treatments like breast cancer surgery. The focus on controlled movement and breathwork can ease discomfort, improve mood, reduce fatigue, and even improve day-to-day function.
Pilates exercises can also stimulate lymphatic flow, which helps reduce fluid build up and boosts immune function, so it’s particularly beneficial when managing lymphoedema.
What can someone expect when they walk into one of your classes for the first time?
A calm, friendly and welcoming environment. I encourage everyone to work at their own pace, and every class is designed to be inclusive and supportive – no matter your fitness level.
How do you modify movements for participants with limited mobility, fatigue, or post-surgical restrictions?
After understanding the participant’s medical history or limitations, I tailor exercises to their needs. We might use props such as pillows, chairs or rollers – or even perform exercises standing up against the wall. I always make an effort to adapt exercises so that everyone is comfortable and safe.
How do you help ensure participants are moving safely and confidently in each class?
My class size is quite small and intimate, so I can ensure each participant is performing the exercises safely and within their capabilities. I can keep a close eye on form, and offer hands-on support if needed. I also provide options for different levels.
What would you say to someone who feels nervous about joining a pilates class?
I would reassure them the class is designed for all levels, and that they can move at their own pace. I’d let them know that I can offer modifications if something doesn’t feel right – I never expect anyone to “push through”.
What’s your favourite part about running group classes?
Creating a fun and enjoyable space where people just happen to get a great work out at the same time. I love seeing the encouragement that happens between participants, it really cements the community of support that CRLS is known for.
What kind of feedback do you hear from participants?
I often hear…
- How great their bodies felt after class and even days afterward
- The more classes they did, the stronger they felt
- The calm environment and encouragement helps them feel more confident
- They feel comfortable asking questions, even if they’ve asked them before
What’s the biggest benefit of attending a Pilates class at CRLS?
It’s a small, intimate environment where each person gets the attention they need. I’m able to focus on individual movements, help people improve safely, and guide them through their recovery, watching as they grow and improve each week.
