A cancer diagnosis affects the whole family, and the challenges don’t always end when treatment does. One lesser-known but significant side effect of cancer treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy is lymphoedema – a condition that causes swelling due to fluid buildup when the lymphatic system is compromised.
Many people don’t realise they’re at risk until swelling becomes noticeable, at which point it can be much harder to manage. That’s why lymphoedema awareness, early detection and proactive care are key to preventing long-term complications.
At Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions, we are dedicated to providing expert, evidence-based treatment to help our patients manage and minimise the risk of lymphoedema, ensuring they can continue to live active, fulfilling lives. As the leading provider of lymphoedema care on the Central Coast, we combine hands-on therapy with advanced technology to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.
Who’s At Risk of Cancer-Related Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema can affect people of all ages, and it may develop months—or even years—after cancer treatment. It can occur when lymph nodes are removed or damaged, reducing the body’s ability to drain lymph fluid efficiently. This leads to swelling (oedema), discomfort, limited mobility, and an increased risk of infection.
When patients undergo cancer treatment, their lymph nodes may be surgically removed or damaged by radiation therapy. This disrupts the natural flow of lymphatic fluid, causing it to pool in areas such as the arms, legs, neck, or abdomen. The more lymph nodes affected, the greater the risk of developing lymphoedema.
Increasing lymphoedema awareness among cancer patients and healthcare professionals is crucial, as early intervention can prevent complications and improve long-term quality of life.
How Lymphoedema Affects Adults vs. Children
Lymphoedema is commonly seen in adults who have undergone treatment for breast cancer, gynaecological cancers, head and neck cancer, and other malignancies. It frequently affects the arms or legs, face and neck, causing discomfort and, if untreated, may lead to chronic swelling and functional limitations.
In children, lymphoedema is rarer but can be congenital (present from birth), known as Primary Lymphoedema, or it can develop after cancer treatment. Long-term management is essential for ensuring normal growth, mobility, and function.
Regardless of age, the earlier lymphoedema is detected, the better the chances of preventing progression and long-term complications.
Detecting Lymphoedema Before Symptoms Appear
Lymphoedema often develops silently, with fluid buildup occurring long before noticeable swelling appears. This is why early detection is critical. At Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions, we use SOZO bioimpedance spectroscopy, an advanced technology that measures subtle changes in fluid levels within the body.
SOZO provides an L-Dex score (Lymphoedema Index), helping us detect lymphoedema before symptoms appear. By tracking this score over time, we can identify fluid buildup and take action before visible swelling appears. With early intervention, we can implement targeted strategies to minimise the risk of the condition from progressing.
Early intervention means better outcomes. With SOZO monitoring, we take a proactive approach to lymphoedema management, reducing the long-term impact of the condition.
Hands-On Care Meets Advanced Technology
At Cancer Rehabilitation & Lymphatic Solutions, we take an integrated approach to lymphoedema management, combining hands-on therapy with cutting-edge medical technology to achieve the best results for our patients.
Led by Kate Perkins, a globally recognised Cancer Rehabilitation OT and Lymphoedema Therapist, our clinic provides comprehensive and personalised treatment plans that go beyond standard care. Kate has over a decade of hands-on experience, has presented at global medical conferences, and co-founded OncoLaser™, an innovative treatment system that uses MLS® Laser Therapy to accelerate healing, reduce swelling, and minimise post-cancer treatment complications.
Joining Kate is Caitlin Hobday, a qualified Cancer Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist and accredited Lymphoedema Therapist, ensuring patients receive skilled, compassionate, and individualised care.
Our evidence-based approach includes:
- SOZO bioimpedance monitoring – Detecting fluid changes before symptoms appear
- OncoLaser™ using MLS® Laser Therapy – Promoting healing, reducing swelling, and minimising scar tissue
- Manual lymphatic drainage therapy – Supporting fluid movement and reducing discomfort
- Compression therapy & garment fitting – Essential for long-term lymphoedema management
- Tailored exercise programs – Enhancing circulation and strengthening muscles
Why Early Detection Matters
Lymphoedema is often diagnosed only after significant swelling occurs, making it harder to manage. By promoting lymphoedema awareness, we can ensure that more patients receive early intervention, improving outcomes and long-term quality of life.
